Lath & Plaster

Lath & Plaster Renovation

Lath and plaster is a traditional building technique whereby thin, narrow strips of straight-grained wood are nailed to wall studs and then plastered over; the plaster fills the small gaps between the laths, forming a strong bond. Traditionally the plaster is mixed with horse or animal hair which reinforces it, making it even stronger.

Lath does not just come in wooden form, although wood is the original material used for laths they are sometimes replaced by rock and even a diamond metal mesh.

Over the years lathe and plaster has been replaced by solid drywall or plasterboard because they are quicker and cheaper to install, but when it comes to restoring and conserving old and historical buildings, sticking with the original is the best way to go as often drywall and plasterboard will not sufficiently match existing finishes. Lathe and plaster is also a better choice when wanting to achieve ornamental or unusual shapes.

With restoration projects it is important to have the plastering look as original as possible and because lath and plaster is a traditional method this is easily achievable. At Chell Building Services we have completed many restoration projects on many grade one and two listed buildings in the South-East, so you can be sure that we have the knowledge and experience to do the job right.

For more information about lath and plaster, or any of our other services, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us by phone or by email and a member of our team will be happy to help.
